How CGPA is calculated

CGPA (cumulative grade point average) is the credit-hour-weighted average of all your semesters, not a simple average of semester GPAs. Multiply each semester's GPA by its credit hours, add the results, and divide by the total credit hours.

Example: 3.20 over 15 credit hours, 3.60 over 12 and 2.90 over 21 give (48 + 43.2 + 60.9) ÷ 48 = 3.17. A simple average of the three GPAs would give 3.23, which overstates the CGPA because the weakest semester also had the most credit hours.

How semester GPA is calculated

Each subject's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours (these products are called quality points). GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours. For A (4.00, 3 cr), B+ (3.33, 3 cr), B- (2.67, 2 cr) and B (3.00, 1 cr): (12 + 9.99 + 5.34 + 3) ÷ 9 = 3.37.

This is the 4.0 scale most Pakistani universities follow under the HEC semester system. Some transcripts print the thirds as 3.66, 2.66, 1.66 and 1.3 instead of 3.67, 2.67, 1.67 and 1.33, and some universities (for example those using relative grading) set their own cut-offs. If your university's grade points differ, use the CGPA tab with the GPAs printed on your result cards; that calculation is the same everywhere.

Planning ahead: the GPA you need

After entering your semesters, set a target CGPA and next semester's credit hours. The calculator solves target × (done + next) − current × done, divided by next. Example: a 2.80 CGPA after 60 credit hours needs a 3.67 over 18 credit hours to reach 3.00. If the answer is above 4.00, the target cannot be reached in one semester.

Frequently asked questions

Is CGPA the average of my semester GPAs?
Only if every semester has the same credit hours. Otherwise it is the credit-hour-weighted average: Σ(GPA × credit hours) ÷ total credit hours.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
There is no single official formula; universities and employers use different conversions, and many accept CGPA as it is. Check your university's equivalence rules or ask for a percentage certificate.
What CGPA is required for scholarships or admission?
It varies. Many universities place students on probation below 2.00, and many postgraduate admissions and HEC-funded scholarships ask for a minimum around 2.50 to 3.00. Check the specific requirement.
Do failed (F) subjects count in CGPA?
An F earns 0 grade points, so its credit hours pull the average down. When you repeat the course, most universities replace the old grade or count the better one; follow your university's rule.
