How many square feet in 1 marla?

It depends on where the land is, which is why two people can quote different sizes for the same “5 marla” plot:

• 225 sq ft — the size used in Lahore and by most housing societies, including DHA and Bahria Town. 1 kanal = 4,500 sq ft.
• 272.25 sq ft — the traditional revenue marla used in land records (fard, intiqal) and for most agricultural land in Punjab. It is one square rod (16.5 ft × 16.5 ft). 1 kanal = 5,445 sq ft, and exactly 8 kanal make an acre.
• 250 sq ft — used by a few private schemes. Always check the size printed on your allotment letter or file.

Whatever the marla size, 1 kanal is always 20 marla and 1 acre is always 43,560 sq ft. That is why an acre is 8 kanal on the revenue scale but about 9.7 kanal on the 225 sq ft scale.

Common plot sizes

Typical dimensions on the 225 sq ft scale: a 5 marla plot is 25 × 45 ft (1,125 sq ft) and a 1 kanal plot is 50 × 90 ft (4,500 sq ft). 10 marla plots are often sold as 35 × 65 ft, which is 2,275 sq ft — slightly more than 10 × 225.

Square yards (gaz) and Karachi plots

Karachi and Sindh measure plots in square yards rather than marla. One square yard is 9 sq ft, so a 120 sq yd plot is 1,080 sq ft — about 4.8 marla on the 225 scale — and a 240 sq yd plot is 2,160 sq ft, about 9.6 marla.

Older revenue units

Land records sometimes use smaller units: 1 marla = 9 sarsai, and one sarsai is one square karam (5.5 ft × 5.5 ft = 30.25 sq ft). For large holdings, 1 acre (killa) = 8 kanal on the revenue scale and 1 murabba (square) = 25 acres.
