How many grams in 1 tola?
1 tola = 11.6638 grams (11.6638038 g exactly), which jewellers usually round to 11.66 g. The tola is the traditional unit for gold and silver in Pakistan, India, Nepal and the Gulf, and Pakistani sarafa markets still quote gold prices per tola alongside the price per 10 grams.
To convert by hand: grams = tola × 11.6638 and tola = grams ÷ 11.6638. For example, 2.5 tola × 11.6638 = 29.16 g, and 10 g ÷ 11.6638 = 0.857 tola.
Tola, masha and ratti
Smaller weights are written in masha and ratti: 1 tola = 12 masha and 1 masha = 8 ratti, so 1 tola = 96 ratti. One masha is 0.972 g and one ratti is 0.1215 g. A ring receipt that says “0 tola 4 masha 2 ratti” is (4 × 8 + 2) = 34 ratti = 4.131 g. The calculator shows every weight in this format too.

Converting an international gold price to a tola rate
World gold prices are quoted in US dollars per troy ounce, and 1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 g = 2.6667 tola. So the price per tola = price per ounce × 0.375 × the dollar rate. Local rates are usually a little higher than this because of import costs and the market premium.
Karat and purity
Rates are quoted for 24-karat (pure) gold. Jewellery in Pakistan is mostly 22 or 21 karat, which is 91.7% and 87.5% gold, so its metal value is that share of the 24K price. 18-karat gold is 75% gold. Shops add making charges (“banwai”) when you buy and take a deduction (“kaat”) when you sell.
